Abstract
In the dearth of textual evidence for the study of Goryeo celadon, the Illustrated Records of the Chinese Embassy to the Goryeo Court during the Xuanhe Era (Xuanhe fengshi Gaoli tujing, hereafter Illustrated Records ) has received tremendous attention in the field. Not only scholars of Korean ceramics during the colonial period but late Joseon literati also came to recognize the significance of Goryeo celadon through what was written in the Illustrated Records. Although it was initially designed to contain both texts and illustrations, its extant version no longer has the illustration potion. In this light, it is safe to assume that its textual information concerning the characters of Goryeo celadon is inevitably partial. Such an incomplete state of the Illustrated Records can generate much speculation and debate. It is imperative that the Illustrated Records be complemented by archaeological materials that are currently available or to be excavated. The Illustrate Records without illustrations, therefore, can continue to serve as the indispensable source for the study of Goryeo celadon. Meanwhile, it should be used in conjunction with multidimensional analyses of actual material evidence of Goryeo celadon.
