Abstract
This paper studies the Buddhist monk Gyechan, who sculpted a seated wooden Buddha triad at Donghwasa in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province. This triad was first examined at the request of the temple in August 2011, and the research on the type of wood used for the triad and the year of production led to a subsequent investigation of the Buddhist relics contained in the statue, including a letter of prayer, and the dedicative inscription on the pedestal, which helped to establish the research standards on triad Buddha statues from the late Joseon Dynasty. The letter of prayer in particular illustrates that it took two and a half months to complete the triad, from the 4th lunar month to the 6th lunar month of 1657, and that several sculptors including Gyechan and Ingye participated in the production process. Gyechan also collaborated with other monk-sculptors for several more Buddha images: a Buddha in the Hall of the Nether World at Yongyeonsa in Dalseong with the monk Eunghye in 1643; a seated wooden Amitābha Buddha and a seated wooden Mahāsthamaprāpta bodhisattva at Sudoam of Cheoneunsa in Gurye with Monk Seungil in 1646; a seated wooden Avalokiteśvara bodhisattva at Buljisa in Gunsan with Monk Eunghye in 1647; a seated wooden Buddha triad at Jeongsusa in Gangjin with Monk Seungil in 1648; and a Buddha at Eunjeongdae in Jinju with Monk Eunghye in 1651.
