Abstract
The “Image of Buddha Amitabha with fifty Bodhisattvas” is based on a legend that Wutong bodhisattva at Kukkutarama Monastery in India asked the Buddha Amitabha to provide an earthly image of himself for the sake of living beings in the world of suffering who wished to be reborn in the Pure Land. Carvings of the image produced during the Tang dynasty(618-907) are composed of the Buddha Amitabha seated in the center and surrounded by bodhisattvas sitting in various positions on lotus f lowers, which are all connected to the same stem. Many carvings depicting the image were produced in the Sichuan region during the early and high Tang periods. Given that the earliest carving exists in the region, and that the image was consistently produced in the same province, examining the development and background of the Sichuan carvings is vital in our understanding of the icon. By examining the images, this study confirms the following facts. First, a number of carvings created during the early Tang survive in Sichuan region. They include the one from the niche no. 3 at Qianfo Cliff of Mt. Wolong in Zitong County(dated to 634 C.E.), the earliest extant carving, and those in niche no. 19 at Bishui Temple in Mianyang(627-649) and at Qianfo Cliff in Tongjiang County, Bazhong(663).
