Abstract

This paper examines the creation of and changes in art created by ethnic Koreans living in China by exploring how Korean-Chinese artists have reflected ethnic images in their art works, and aims to suggest directions for a new development. As changes in art by ethnic Koreans have appeared in line with changes in Chinese society, this paper studies ethnic Koreans’ art by dividing its development period into three phases. In terms of the content of the art, the first period was when a socialist ideology was strongly reflected in their work. Like all other Chinese artists during this period, China ’s ethnic Korean artists selected to praise socialism as the most important theme of their artworks, with ethnic images playing a secondary role to the main theme. The second period was when portraying ethnic images reached a peak. During this time, ethnic Korean artists reestablished their art and sought the purpose of their art from their Korean-Chinese characteristics, by portraying ethnic images on their canvases. The final period was when depicting the lives of ethnic Koreans in China disappeared. During this time, ethnic Korean artists showed a movement towards ceasing to reflect ethnic images in their art and came to assimilate into the mainstream of Chinese art. Toward the end, this paper surveys the problems that ethnic Korean art is facing, based on other comprehensive research.
