Abstract

Many scholars consider the Tanzhai biheng (坦齋筆衡) as the most valuable source for official kilns of the Southern Song Dynasty among the contemporaneous literatures. Based on this book, it is possible to infer a few essential facts about official kilns of the period. Prior to 1162 in the Southern Song, for instance, the official klin was installed within the Xiuneisi (修內 司) in Linan (臨安). This project appears to have been led by a bureau called Houyuan (後苑), also known as Shaoju (邵局), and later the Jiaotanxia official klin (郊壇下官窯) was also built. However, some scholars argue that it was Xiuneisi that took charge of the building of official kilns in the Southern Song or the Jiaotanxia official klin, referring to a passage that reads “Xinyao Xiuneisi zishaozhe (新窯修內司自燒者)” in Chapter 9 of the Baibao zongzhenji (百寶 總珍集), which is presumed to have been written in the mid-Southern Song. Other scholars cite a Chinese character “jin (近 proximity)” in a passage that reads “Qingciqi …… jin Linan yizishaozhi (青甆器 …… 近臨安亦自燒之)” in the Yunlu manchao (雲麓漫鈔) written by Zhao Yanwei (趙彦衛) within a similar timeframe, and assert that official kilns were built in Linan only several years ahead of the completion of the Yunlu manchao in 1206. These arguments refute the aforementioned contentions that the building of the Xiuneisi official klin was led by Houyuan (or Shaoju) and that official kilns were built in Linan earlier than 1162. Nevertheless, the arguments of the second group of researchers appear to be attributed to a misunderstanding on the actual meanings of the relevant passages in the Baibao zongzhenji and the Yunlu manchao. In the Baibao zongzhenji, the word “zishao (自燒)” does not mean that Xiuneisi itself built and managed official kilns, but that official wares were fired in the kiln within the jurisdiction of Xiuneisi. Moreover, the character “jin ( 近)” in the Yunlu manchao implies a far broader range of time than just a few years prior to 1206, considering the original meaning and the author ’s usage of the character. In this regard, the passages in the Baibao zongzhenji and the Yunlu manchao demonstrate almost the same historical facts as the records related to official kilns of the Southern Song Dynasty as described in the Tanzhai biheng. Based on the explanation in the Baibao zongzhenji and the Yunlu manchao, therefore, there is no ground to doubt the reliability of the records in the Tanzhai biheng.
