Abstract
In Korean Buddhist art, the term bokjang refers to both the ritual of image consecration and objects enshrined within inner recesses of Buddhist images during the ritual. Stored inside the images and thus not visible from the exterior, the enshrined objects provide an opportunity to examine the perception of Buddhist images, which is not easy to grasp by examining the appearance of or textual records of the images alone. The composition of the bokjang items, which centers on the ‘five vases,’ differentiates the Korean consecration ritual from those practiced in other parts of Buddhist Asia.
