Abstract
The Korean artist Jeong Seon ( 1676-1759) produced the paintings Climbing Ok-Dong (1739), Stream at Punggye (1739), Small Pavilion at Western Garden (1749), and Viewing Seoul at Western Garden (1740) to commemorate a meeting between Li Chun-je (1692-1761) who was Gyeonghwasejok (prominent family living in the Capital district) and members of the Soron (Young Doctrine). All four of the paintings are now kept in different places. Verses and pictures created by the participants were kept at Li Chun-je’s house under the title Seowoncheop (Album of Western Garden). Li Chun-je’s family also kept a large number of paintings by Jeong Seon. Jungeunjaeyugo (Jungeunjae ’s Posthumous Works), a collection of Li Chun-je ’s writings, and Ilwaongyugo (Ilwaong’s Posthumous Works), a collection of the writings of Yi Chang-geup (1727-1803), the son of Li Chun-je, are kept by Yeonghaegun Faction of Jeonju Li Clan. Anthology of Li Clan contains the list of books and painting albums kept by the family and many records of the family’s relationship with Jeong Seon. Most of the paintings kept by the family are associated with Jeong Seon’s Hanyang Jingyeong (True-View Landscape Painting of Hanyang), suggesting that the Li Chun-je family was an important patron of Jeong Seon. It was in his later years that Jeong Seon started producing paintings depicting the scenery of Hanyang (present-day Seoul). The change from paintings of Geumgangsan Mountain to Hanyang Jingyeong (True-View Landscape Painting of Hanyang) as the focus of his interest was influenced by the way the nobility in Seoul had come to view of taking excursions outside Seoul. The Gyeonghwasejok (prominent family living in the Capital district) realized that there were many pleasant places to visit and admire in and around Seoul and that they did not have to take the trouble of going all the way to faraway places like Geumgangsan Mountain. Gyeonghwasejok as Li family were proud of living in the Capital city of Hanyang, the center of culture and politics. When this pride encountered painter jeong Seon, talented for topographical landscapes, created true-view landscape painting of Hanyang. Increasing demands of Gyeonghwasejok is the decisive cause of production of true-view landscape painting of Hanyang in Jeong Seon’s later years .
