Abstract

The Scriptural Illustrations of the Sixteen Anapanasati Stages produced during the late Goryeo Period has attracted a lot attention from scholars by its refined and exuberant artistic expressions as well as the unique tradition of worshipping the Buddhist Pure Land established during the late Goryeo Period. Among many works of the same category, the illustrations collected by Saifukuji Temple in Fukui Prefecture in about 1300 is widely regarded as providing some criteria for the late Goryeo works as they contain a clear structure and icons of the sixteen anapanasati stages explicated in The Sutra of Visualization of the Buddha of Infinite Life . The icons in these works show close similarities with the Buddhist paintings produced in the Zhejiang Province during Song (960-1279), suggesting that the Goryeo's scriptural illustrations were originated from those of Song. In addition, the Saifukuji version exhibits a strong influence of the philosophy and worship of the Cheontae Pure Land which became deeply rooted in the late Goryeo society spurred by the movement of the White Lotus Society. The Scriptural Illustrations of the Sixteen Anapanasati Stages in Saifukuji does not reflect the tradition of believing in the rebirth in the Pure Land by repeated mantra recitation and the vow of Amitabha Buddha.
