Abstract

Byeon Ji-sun (pen-name: Haebu, c. 1780-1831) had earned reputation as a literati artist with works exhibiting excellent techniques in various genres, including landscapes and flower-and-bird painting, while showing a strong influence from the works by Kim Hong-do (1745-1806). Born in Dongnae of Gyeongsang-do, he held some local military positions such as Junggun(Adjutant) of Dongnaebu and also filled various central government posts such as Owijang(Commander of the Five Commands). Currently there are about 40 paintings remaining to show his own world of art built on the styles of Danwon School and the Literati Painting of the Southern School which were in great vogue during the late Joseon Period. Maehwado (Plum Blossom) and Sansudo (Landscape) contained in his Painting Albums are two fine examples to show the influence. The paintings of Byeon Ji-sun are believed to have exerted influence over the style of the local artists of Dongnae such as Byeon Ji-han and Kim Dal-hwang. I also believe that he had been a dominant figure in the local society and art communities who actively engaged in various political and artistic activities. Considering little knowledge of the achievement made by local artists during late Joseon, the works and records of Byeon Ji-sun remaining today are expected to provide a valuable clue for characteristics and sizes of local artists and their communities of his time.
